Premier Greg Selinger said a re-elected NDP government will cap class sizes for kids in kindergarten to grade 3 at 20 students within five years.
He said the initiative would cost an additional $20 million annually in teachers’ salaries and a total of $85 million to expand schools.
The NDP estimates the province would need an extra 240 teachers to meet the class-size target.
Selinger made the announcement at the headquarters of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society.
He said research shows kids do better throughout their school career if they get a good start. The NDP initiative would do that by allowing kids more individual attention from their teachers, he said.
