Liberals target diabetes; Tories, NDP head north

The Liberals are pledging $4.6 million to fight diabetes today, while Tory leader Hugh McFadyen is travelling to Swan River for a health announcement.

In what will likely be a fairly quiet weekend on the campaign trail, Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard will make his announcement in the Point Douglas riding this morning. He will promise cash for prevention and early-detection programs, especially for those at risk such as Aboriginal people and those living in remote communities.

Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen is in the western Manitoba riding of Swan River, which the Tories hope to recapture. It’s been held for 21 years by retiring Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk. Following his health announcement McFadyen will door-knock with candidate Dave Powell.

Meanwhile, NDP Leader Greg Selinger is en route this morning to Thompson, Flin Flon and The Pas where he will make a series of infrastructure and health announcements focused on the north.
