COLUMBUS — The first ever game-over story in the NHL pre-season for the Winnipeg Jets is not a happy one.

They were trounced 5-1 at Nationwide Arena by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the Ohio half of the split-squad games tonight.

The Jackets scored fivegoals on 19 shots against Jets goalie Chris Mason in the first two periods and that was that.

Goalie Peter Mannino stopped all four shots he faced in the third period.

Evander Kane scored Wininpeg’s first pre-season goal at 6:21 of the second period.

Columbus had goals in the first period by Nick Holden and four more in the second, those by Maksim Mayorov, Boone Jenner, Antoine Vermette and Samuel Pahlsson.

“We were pretty soft in our defensive zone,” said Jets centre Jim Slater, who generated ample offence as his team outshot the Blue Jackets 26-23.

This version of the Jets flew home right after the game and will be on the ice at the MTS Centre on Wednesday. What they will need to work on was evident for Keith McCambridge, the St. John’s IceCaps head coach who ran the bench for the Jets here.

“I thought we were slow to contain in our D-zone coverage,” McCambridge said. “That comes from a lot of new faces in a short period of time playing together. I thought we were really slow taking away time and space.”
