Blue Bombers 24
Argonauts 25
Offence
Argos running back Cory Boyd rushed for 109 yards on 12 carries, making the most of his opportunities. Bombers receiver Clarence Denmark deserves mention for 80 yards on eight catches, including a touchdown grab that might be the catch of the year.
Defence
Bombers corner Jovon Johnson had two picks and leads the league with six. Johnson took his first interception to the end zone to give the Bombers an early lead. There wasn’t much to cheer about on either side of the ball for Winnipeg, but Johnson did have a strong game.
Special Teams
Toronto’s Chad Owens gave his offence good field position all day with a solid return game. Ownes picked up 142 yards on kickoff returns and another 77 on punts. Owens had a 23.7 yard kickoff return average.
Crunch of the Game
In the second quarter Argos defensive tackle Kevin Huntley hammered Bombers QB Buck Pierce after the ball was released. It was immediately apparent Pierce was hurting, but he took a few more snaps before head coach Paul LaPolice pulled him from the game.
Numbers Game
12 — Toronto first downs in a winning effort, while the Bombers made 20 in a loss
5 — Number of quarterbacks that saw action in the game, with Winnipeg using three
9 — Number of turnovers — five for Toronto and four for Winnipeg
147 — Total penalty yards against the Argos, while Winnipeg had just 60
338 — Total return yards for the Argos, as they did a lot with a little thanks to excellent special teams work
