Canada’s first medal of the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games has a Winnipeg twinkle to it.

Derek Oryniak, 17, was a part of Canada’s mixed curling team that picked up a bronze medal in Innsbruck, Austria Wednesday. Oryniak’s rink, skipped by Thomas Scoffin of Whitehorse, got past Sweden 6-4 to claim the hardware. Canada earned the third-place finish after losing to Italy in the semifinal.

Oryniak, one of two Manitoba-products competing in Austria, threw second stones for Canada.

It’s been quite a January for the Miles Macdonell student. Earlier this month, his West Kildonan club team (skipped by Kyle Doering) won the 2012 Junior Men’s Provincial Championship. They will represent Manitoba at the 2012 Junior Men’s Canadian Championship in Napanee, Ont. in February.
