The move wasn’t completely out of left field, as the 29-year-old is coming off an ACL injury suffered with six games left in the 2011 season.

Reid led the CFL in rushing in 2010, running for 1,396 yards and six touchdowns. The five-year veteran rushed for 4,505 yards and 22 touchdowns with the Bombers.

“We’d like to thank Fred for his contributions to the Winnipeg Football Club over the past five years,” Bombers GM Joe Mack said in a statement. “As always in this business, these types of decisions are hard ones to make however for a variety of reasons, we feel comfortable going in a different direction at this time and are confident this move is in the best interest of the football club.”
