New Jets goaltender Al Montoya is showing off some Canadian pride with his new helmet art, which may come as a surprise to some — he’s American.

“Can’t beat the maple leaf. Being American, I still allowed it,” Montoya told the Free Press at MTS Centre Thursday.

The red “Jets-styled” maple leaf is front and centre on the mask, designed and created by artist Ray Bishop, but Montoya’s helmet also features more subtle tributes to his Cuban and American background.
