WINNIPEG — Attendance improved again today as the Winnipeg Jets continue their unofficial skates ahead of NHL training camps, which are expected to open Sunday.
Forward Kyle Wellwood was the newest face with the group this morning at the MTS Centre for an on-ice session without the teams coaches.
The 29-year-old returns to the Jets with a new one-year contract and a decent raise to $1.6 million (annually) over the $700,000 he made last season.
Wellwood said today he stayed at his Windsor, Ont.-area home during the lockout.
“I was hanging out with my little boy and my fiance and just kind of hanging out and waiting for things to shape up,” he said.
His on-ice activity was limited to skates in nearby Detroit.
“I skated over in Detroit with some of the Wings guys and other NHLers,” Wellwood said. “I was able to have some good skates and have some fun that way.”
With 20 players on the ice today, left to arrive are forwards Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarovsky, who were playing in the KHL during the lockout, and Evander Kane.
2011 first-round draft pick Mark Scheifele hasn’t yet been officially recalled but is expected in Winnipeg for training camp. Scheifele scored a goal, his 22nd of the season, for the Barrie Colts on Thursday night in a shootout win over Mississauga.
The Colts are in Guelph for a game tonight.
The Jets are slated to open the delayed NHL season a week from Saturday, Jan. 19, against Ottawa.
