Switzerland’s Jaggi qualifies for playoffs

Switzerland’s Michelle Jaggi has become the third of eight teams to qualify for Monday’s playoff round at the $60,000 Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Womens Curling Classic at Fort Rouge Curling Club.

Jaggi advanced to Monday morning’s quarterfinal round with a 5-4 win Sunday afternoon over Michelle Montford’s Winnipeg foursome. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Montford team, but they will get a second chance to qualify for the playoffs when they play Winnipeg’s Barb Spencer in one of four C-side qualifying games at 7:30 p.m..

Spencer advanced to face Carey with a 5-4 extra end win over New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford on the 12:30 p.m. draw. Spencer stole the extra end winner.

In other notable results on Sunday’s 12:30 p.m. draw, Winnipeg’s Jill Thurston stayed alive on the C-side by eliminating 2009 women’s world champion Bingyu Wang, as did Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey by beating Winnipeg’s Kim Link 6-4.

Thurston will play 2006 Olympic bronze medallist Shannon Kleibrink on the 4 p.m. draw, while Carey takes on reigning world champion Eve Muirhead on the same draw. The winners of those games advance to C-side qualifiers Sunday evening.

Also on the 4 p.m. draw, Winnipeg’s Janet Harvey plays Edmonton’s Valerie Sweeting in a B-side qualifying game.
