KRASNAYA POLAYNA, Russia – Erik Guay overcame a knee injury from earlier this season to finish 10th in the men’s Olympic downhill Sunday.

The native of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was the top Canadian in two minutes 7.04 seconds, finishing 0.81 seconds off the gold medal.

“I skied all right. I made some mistakes around the lake jump,” said Guay. “The snow was getting soft, and I had new skis, but I did try.”

“I am disappointed, but after how I did this season, it’s OK.”

Austria’s Matthias Mayer completed the Rosa Khutor course in 2:06.23 to win gold. Italy’s Christof Innerhofer took silver, 0.06 seconds behind, and Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud earned bronze, 0.10 behind.

Guay’s Olympic dreams were endangered after suffering a knee injury from a fall during a World Cup race at Wengen, Switzerland, on Jan. 18th.

“I injured my knee last summer, and I only skied from November,” said Guay. “I felt good with my knee, and I had a good feeling on the skis until I injured myself again in Wengen.

“I knew it was going to be harsh, but I knew if I skied like I did during the training, it could work.”
