Fringe performer reports harassment in response to play’s content

An actress at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival who plays the part of Virgin Mary conning the world into believing her son rose from the dead, has reported being harassed and threatened by protesters. She says they have defaced posters, yelled insults at her on the street and written “slut” on her car.

Theresa Thomson, who acknowledges the production Lies of a Promiscuous Woman and her role in it is blasphemous, told CBC Radio Monday morning that she plans to report the incidents to police today.

In the broadcast interview Thomson describe how, after a member of the play’s production staff reported the “escalating” incidents to Festival general manager Jason Neufeld on the weekend, he said he was approached by two men a couple of days earlier who demanded the show be shut down.

Thomson said Neufeld told them, “No.”

The men, reportedly unhappy with this response, said they would do something about it themselves.

Thomson said she only heard about Neufeld’s encounter with the protesters on Sunday, the same day she discovered the word “slut” written on her car.
