The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have extended quarterback Drew Willy’s contract for two years, the team announced this morning.

Willy’s deal will now run through the end of the 2017 CFL season. This year, he was entering the final year of his two-year contract.

“(Winnipeg is) a special place to me,” Willy said at this morning’s press conference at Investors Group Field. “Last year, the community took me under its wing. We’re looking to build on that this year.

“I look forward to building a ton of memories out there for years to come.”

Bombers GM Kyle Walters said the team paid the going rate for a CFL starter for the two extension years but wouldn’t say what the salary was. It includes a bump in Willy’s compensation, mostly through bonus, this season.

“Real exciting, big news for the organization,” Walters said today. “Stability, that’s what we’re building.

“We’re prepared to build around him. We’ve surrounded Drew with some better pieces this year.”

Walters said he and Willy’s agent have been working on this deal for some time.

“We wanted to get this done before the season (started),” Walters said.

Walters also said he had no reservations about signing Willy to an extension after seeing just one year of play from the 28-year-old quarterback.

“We saw what Drew was about and the way he played last year, led the team on and off the field,” Walters said. “Those intangibles are important to Mike (O’Shea, head coach) and myself.

“There’s something about Drew we’re prepared to hang our hat on.”

More to come.
