One of the Winnipeg Jets most promising young prospects is on the move.
Brendan Lemieux, son of former NHLer Claude Lemieux, was traded by the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League to the Windsor Spitfires Thursday in return for forward Anthony Stefano. Lemieux, 19, was drafted in 2014 in the second round by the Buffalo Sabres, but was acquired by the Jets as part of a trade last February that sent forward Evander Kane the other way.
The Spitfires also recover their third-round pick as well as receive Barrie’s fourth-round selection in 2017. In return, Windsor gets a third-round pick in 2019 and a second-round pick in 2021.
Lemieux recorded nine goals and 14 points in 11 games for the Colts this season. Known for his physical play, part of what makes him an attractive option for the Jets, the Denver native registered 370 penalty minutes in 175 games with Barrie, including back-to-back seasons with 145 PIMs in 2013-14 and 2014-15. This year he’s missed 16 games due to suspension, including 10 games for a check to the head penalty.
The Jets liked what they saw from Lemieux in training camp, but given the number of young players making the jump to the NHL and the fact he was still eligible to return to his junior team, Winnipeg opted to send him back to the OHL. Lemieux joins a Windsor team expected to make a run this season. They sit second place in the Western Conference with a record of 16-9-4.
