A 27-year-old man wanted in connection with a North End slaying earlier this month was released from custody on unrelated charges Monday before detectives had linked him to the homicide.

Police warned the public Thursday that Maxim Dale Garneau, who remains at large, is considered dangerous.

He is wanted for second-degree murder in the killing of Edgar Allan Bear, 56, at a home at 1246 Selkirk Ave. on March 18.

Winnipeg police were summoned after a body was found at the home.

Police identified Bear as a member of Peguis First Nation who had been living in the city. His death was the city’s ninth homicide of the year.

On March 19, Garneau was picked up by Winnipeg police on four weapons offences, including possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, and four court order breaches, court records show.

He was granted bail on those charges in provincial court Monday.

Garneau also has other pending charges, including a count of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking from January, and a charge of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace from July 2023, records show.

His record includes convictions for weapons offences, multiple court order breaches, theft and mischief.

Garneau was jailed for 474 days for an assault with a weapon committed on Christmas Day in 2019. He was also given two years of supervised probation, prohibited from possessing weapons for 10 years, and ordered to hand over his DNA to police.

Police ask anyone with information about Garneau’s whereabouts to call the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS).
