Two men still wanted in unrelated killings

Homicide detectives are still searching for two men accused in separate slayings who have been on the lam since last week.

Winnipeg Police Service investigators said Thursday they had obtained a second-degree murder warrant for Maxim Dale Garneau, 27, for his alleged role in the killing of Edgar Allan Bear, 56, in a Selkirk Avenue home on March 18.

Police announced on March 26 that Dyson Irvin Sumner, 28, was wanted on a warrant for second-degree murder in the March 19 slaying of Murdo Baker, 24, in a public housing complex on Main Street and Jarvis Avenue.

Police spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said Monday that both wanted men remain at large.

Tracking down slaying suspects can take time, he said.

“It takes a lot of communication between investigative bodies, and there’s the collection of evidence that remains ongoing,” Chancy said, adding that in cases such as these, police sometimes elicit tips from the public on where suspects might be.

Sumner was already wanted for breaching his bail conditions at the time Baker was slain. A warrant was issued in February for allegedly breaching a release order in January. Sumner remains before the court on a number of weapons offences and court order breaches, records show.

Garneau was let out on bail last week on unrelated charges before detectives linked him to Bear’s killing.
