A shut-down pipeline that supplies gas, diesel and jet fuel to the Winnipeg area has partially reopened.

One of the two fuel lines in the pipeline began operating Tuesday as Imperial Oil continues work to fully repair the pipeline. The opening of one fuel line Tuesday restored a partial flow through the pipeline between Gretna and Winnipeg and will significantly reduce the volume of fuel that has to be delivered by rail or truck, the province said in a news release.

The repair work is on a section of the pipeline that runs under the Red River south of St. Adolphe. Imperial Oil announced on March 17 that it had shut the pipeline down. The energy giant said at the time that the decision followed “proactive pipeline inspections” that identified integrity concerns.

One of two fuel lines in the shut-down Imperial Oil pipeline is now open, the Manitoba government said Tuesday.

“Provincial inspectors will continue to monitor the repair operation to ensure all regulations and environmental protection measures are followed as repairs to the second fuel line are completed in order to return the pipeline to full operation,” the release said.

The repair work is on schedule and expected to be completed by mid-June, the Manitoba government said, adding supplies of gas, diesel and aviation fuel are stable. The province said it is maintaining close contact with suppliers and stakeholders to track supply levels and fuel distribution.
