VANCOUVER — Betty Fox, the mother of Canadian cancer icon Terry Fox, is seriously ill, but reports she has cancer are incorrect, a statement on the Terry Fox Foundation’s website said Friday.
“We wish to share that our wife and mother, Mrs. Betty Fox, is seriously ill,” said a statement from her family.
“Media reports today that she has cancer are incorrect. To respect her privacy, no other details will be provided.
“We have always appreciated the support and understanding the media has granted to our family since Terry’s Marathon of Hope in 1980. We are hopeful that Betty’s privacy and ours will be respected at this time. We thank you in advance for your consideration.”
The statement said messages of support for Betty Fox can be sent to bettyfoxmessages@gmail.com.
Betty’s son, Terry, was born in Winnipeg and raised in Port Coquitlam, B.C.
When he was 18, he was diagnosed with bone cancer and forced to have his right leg amputated above the knee.
He decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
He spent 18 months and trekked more than 5,000 kilometres in his Marathon of Hope, beginning in St. John’s.
Eventually, he was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ont.
He died June 28, 1981, at the age of 22.
