BURNABY, B.C. – Burnaby South

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh secured Burnaby South in a byelection earlier this year. The federal election will mark a test of his leadership as well as whether he’s kept his promises to local residents. Affordable housing is arguably the top concern in the riding as an ongoing market correction still hasn’t brought down the cost of owning or renting a home to levels on par with local incomes. Environmental issues also dominate because of the community’s proximity to the Trans Mountain pipeline project.

Population: 111,973 (Statistics Canada)

Incumbent: Jagmeet Singh (NDP)

Main challengers: The Liberals have selected entrepreneur Neelam Brar and the Conservatives are hoping lawyer Jay Shin can unseat Singh. Brennan Wauters, a certified electrician specializing in electric vehicle charging and solar panels, is running for the Greens, while the People’s Party of Canada has selected businessman Al Rawdah.

Election history: The riding was created when boundaries were redistributed in 2012 and encompasses parts of Burnaby that were previously included in Burnaby-Douglas and Burnaby New-Westminster. New Democrat Kennedy Stewart narrowly beat Liberal Adam Pankratz by 1.2 per cent of the vote in the 2015. After Stewart stepped down last year to successfully run as Vancouver’s mayor, Singh comfortably won a February byelection, beating the Liberal runner-up.

Fun fact: Burnaby South Secondary School has a number of notable alumni, including actor Michael J. Fox, former B.C. premier Christy Clark and professional soccer player Christine Sinclair.
