REGINA – The Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders are back home, hoisting the CFL’s top prize in front of cheering fans outside Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.

The crowd, wearing their green and white attire, hooted and rang bells as a pep band played and the players led all in a chant of “Let’s go Riders!” and “Rider Nation!”

Riders head coach Corey Mace told the crowd that the team worked hard, and quarterback Trevor Harris said the fans kept him motivated.

The crowd chanted “Two more years!” in a plea to get Harris to stay on the team next season.

The celebration followed the Riders beating the Montreal Alouettes 25-17 to take the cup Sunday in Winnipeg.

Rider fan Del Bachynski says the team worked hard all year and she’s proud of them.

“They’ve been champions all year and it’s nice they came away with what their whole goal was — the Grey Cup,” she said Monday outside the stadium.

Sandra Flegel said she was nervous watching the players hold the cup, as they were standing above the crowd near the stadium’s roof.

“I thought it was going to fall,” she said.

Her son, Stephen Flegel, said he almost gave his mother a heart attack after screaming in front of the TV Sunday night.

“Let’s do it again next year!” he yelled.

After the celebration, players were taking photos with fans, and signing autographs on jerseys and footballs.

“Rider Nation is a family,” said fan Patrick Janex.

He said he drove from Winnipeg in the morning after watching the game.

“I can’t believe what just happened,” he said. “It’s been 12 years since we won that cup and brought it back to the Prairies, where it belongs.”

A championship parade is scheduled Tuesday in Regina down Albert Street — known as the Green Mile — followed by a ceremony in front of the legislature building.
