Ice jam still worry: Mayor

WHILE the Red River posed no problem within the city of Winnipeg on Friday, officials remain concerned about the possibility of another ice jam forming on a stretch protected by the Red River Floodway.

Officials are trying to come up with contingency plans to deal with the possibility, but there are too many variables at work to predict when, where or even if another ice jam will materialize.

"We’re all sitting on pins and needles trying to determine something we don’t know for sure, and that’s what happens with the ice," Mayor Sam Katz said Friday.

The height of the Red River at James Avenue actually dropped throughout the day.

Fighting overland flooding

CITY thawing crews will spend the weekend trying to open frozen curb inlets, catch basins, ditches and culverts, provided temperatures rise enough to allow steamer trucks to do the job.

The city is asking property owners to call 311 to deal with overland-flooding trouble spots and to specify whether any property is at imminent risk of damage.

Sandbags remain available at city works yards at 1220 Pacific Ave., 849 Ravelston Ave. West and 1539 Waverley St.

Emergency ops running

THE city of Winnipeg has quietly activated its emergency operations centre, even though the city is not in a state of emergency.

The EOC opened on Thursday but is not yet operational 24 hours a day, city spokeswoman Pam Sveinson said.
