Some stores in the Kildonan Place mall on Regent Avenue were forced to close Wednesday after a number of young people began fighting and one of them blasted pepper spray at the others as shoppers scrambled to get out of the way.

An employee who contacted the Free Press said the fight approached the centre court attraction, where parents were lined up with their children to get photos with the Easter bunny.

“People were screaming like crazy. People didn’t know what it was,” the employee, who didn’t want their name used, said.

The employee said some of the teens involved in the incident wore masks with skeleton symbols on them.

Another worker said one of the teens, who appeared to have been assaulted, was taken to hospital by ambulance. However, police said no serious injuries were reported.

A store manager, who asked not to be named, said customers had said several people had breathed in pepper spray and that the incident happened near the food court. They said most stores stayed open but those close to the incident were closed.

Const. Jason Michalyshen, a spokesman for the Winnipeg Police Service, said it received reports of an altercation involving several youths at about 5:20 p.m.

Three youths were arrested. The investigation is ongoing, Michalyshen said.

Mall management declined comment Thursday.
