Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew took to social media on Sunday evening to congratulate Mark Carney, the newly-elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on what he called “an impressive margin of victory.”

“Look forward to working together as part of Team Canada to protect this country we all love,” Kinew wrote in a post on X.

When reached by phone in Ottawa, Ben Carr, MP for Winnipeg South Centre, said he was en route to give the prime minister-designate a “hearty congratulatory handshake.”

Premier Wab Kinew, along with other local Liberal MPs congratulated prime minister-designate Mark Carney on his Liberal leadership win Sunday.

Carr, along with Winnipeg-based caucus colleagues Kevin Lamoureux and Dan Vandal, had publicly endorsed former finance minister Chrystia Freeland for the role.

Winnipeg South MP Terry Duguid, who is also the federal minister of sport, remained neutral, owing to his position as co-chair of the Liberal party’s national campaign.

Carr said he was an early supporter of Freeland’s because of both their personal relationship and his confidence in her leadership skills.

“The moment the results came in, as I promised I would, the new chapter begins and my support is behind Mark and our entire team as we continue the really important work in front of us as country now,” he told the Free Press Sunday.
