Sgt. Vince Adams of Winnipeg shows his Sacrifice medal following Remembrance Day ceremonies at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan November 11, 2009. Adams became the first Canadian to be awarded the Sacrifice Medal while serving in Afghanistan.   The 40-year old infantryman received the newly minted medal for having survived an anti-personal mine attack that killed four other members of his platoon and left him with a hole in his abdomen and shrapnel in his legs.

Greenfield, 25, who was born in Winnipeg, was killed when his armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Zhari district west of Kandahar city on Jan. 31, 2009. He was the 108th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan.
