Jets can’t hold lead in 3-2 loss to Ducks

The Winnipeg Jets rallied in the third period, but were unable to hold the lead as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night at the Honda Center.

Mark Scheifele gave the Jets a 2-1 lead, but the Ducks tied it on a deflection goal from Frank Vatrano and got the winner from Troy Terry with 26 seconds to go in regulation time.

Terry’s goal came after Vatrano, who finished with two goals and an assist, forced a defensive zone turnover in the corner.

The Jets, who slipped to 23-10-1 for the season, face the Minnesota Wild on Saturday in what will be the final game before the holiday break.

Backup goalie Eric Comrie was the reason the Jets were within striking distance after two periods and finished with 28 saves as he lost a fifth consecutive game despite another strong performance.

Nikolaj Ehlers was back in the Jets’ lineup after missing the previous nine games with a lower-body injury and he finished with an assist.

Ehlers returns for Jets versus Ducks

Nikolaj Ehlers is back in the Winnipeg Jets’ lineup.
The speedy winger was activated from injured reserve and back on the second line with Vladislav Namestnikov and Cole Perfetti for Thursday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.
Ehlers missed the previous nine contests with a lower-body injury he suffered against the Vegas Golden Knights on Nov. 29.
Ehlers, who has nine goals and 25 points in 24 games this season, replaced Nikita Chibrikov in the lineup.
The Jets made two other changes, inserting Ville Heinola for Colin Miller on the third pairing with Logan Stanley, while Eric Comrie will make his eighth start of the season.
To make room for Ehlers on the roster, the Jets placed forward David Gustafsson on injured reserve, retroactive to Dec. 10.
Earlier in the day, the Jets placed defenceman Dylan Coghlan on waivers, with the purpose of assigning him to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

Police search for suspect in Opaskwayak carjacking

Police are searching for a suspect after a carjacking on Opaskwayak Cree Nation last month.

The Manitoba First Nations Police was contacted on Nov. 27 about a carjacking on Opaskwayak Cree Nation the evening before.

Officers found the stolen vehicle in a snowbank. Officers  learned two men had asked for a ride, and one of them pulled out a gun and demanded the victim’s belongings and her vehicle.

One of the men fired the gun inside the vehicle. The vehicle stopped, and the victim was able to flee, police said.

A 25-year-old Moose Lake man was arrested by RCMP in The Pas on Sunday and has been charged with two offences.

Police continue to search for the 20-year-old man who allegedly fired the gun. David William Campbell has been charged with several offences.

He is described as Indigenous in appearance, about 6-1 and 190 pounds.

Campbell is believed to be in the areas of Opaskwayak,  The Pas or Moose Lake.

“He is considered to be armed and dangerous,” a Wednesday news release said.

The MFNPS asked anyone who sees Campbell to call police.

Woman missing in Thompson

RCMP are asking for the public’s help in finding a woman last seen in Thompson.

Police were contacted about a woman missing from an address on McGill Place at about 7 p.m. Friday.

Nadine Colomb, 36, was last seen Thursday evening, and police were told she was going to take a bus to Winnipeg.

The bus service told police there was no record of her leaving with them. It is believed Colomb is still in the Thompson area, RCMP said Wednesday.

She is described as 5-5, 170 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. No clothing description was provided, but RCMP were told she was dressed appropriately for the weather.

RCMP asked anyone with information on Colomb’s whereabouts to contact the Thompson detachment at 204-677-6909/6911, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online.

Man charged with manslaughter in slaying near Ebb and Flow First Nation

A man arrested earlier this week for a fatal shooting near Ebb and Flow First Nation has been charged with manslaughter.

RCMP said Wednesday that the homicide was “a targeted incident.”

Cyril St. Paul, 53, was arrested at a home in the community after an injured 34-year-old man was found lying beside a truck on Highway 278 on Sunday morning.

The victim died from his injuries after being taken to hospital in Dauphin.

David Cross brings standup show to the Burt

Emmy-winning actor-comedian David Cross is bringing his The End of the Beginning of the End standup tour to the Burton Cummings Theatre on March 19 at 8 p.m.

Cross got his start in standup at age 17 and released several comedy albums on the Sub Pop label; with Bob Odenkirk — who made two films in Winnipeg this fall — he went on to create and star in the sketch-comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David. He might be best known for playing Tobias Fünke on Arrested Development.

Tickets are $53 to $69 and go on sale Friday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m.

Keep pathways clear for returning carriers, Canada Post asks

With mail delivery resuming Tuesday after a strike, Canada Post is reminding people to keep pathways to homes and businesses clear of snow and ice.

“With the cold and snow gripping most regions across the country, slippery and dark walkways, as well as seasonal decorations, can pose a safety risk to our employees — and others,” the Crown corporation said in a news release.

“That is why we’re reminding homeowners and businesses to help us deliver letters and parcels safely by keeping a clear and safe path to their home or business. With everyone’s support, we can help avoid an injury that can happen in just seconds.”

The release did not give examples of “seasonal decorations” or state how carriers might be injured by them.

In addition to keeping pathways free and clear of ice, Canada Post is asking people to remove ice from stairs, keep stairs and handrails free of obstructions and turn on outdoor lighting to ensure pathways and stairs are visible.

Fire in vacant Charleswood house extinguished

Crews battled a blaze in a vacant, board-up house in Charleswood on Tuesday night.

Firefighters were sent to the house on the 6000 block of Roblin Boulevard at 7:39 p.m. Crews initially fought the fire from outside and declared it under control at 9:08 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

It was the sixth fire in a vacant structure in Winnipeg between Sunday and Tuesday.

Faith reporter among Manitobans named to Order of Canada

Free Press faith reporter John Longhurst has been named a member of the Order of Canada by Governor General Mary Simon.

The full list of new officers and members was announced today.

In the announcement, Longhurst is credited for his work as columnist and making his goal “to promote positive interdenominational relations, to reduce hate and to help readers see the humanity in every person.”

Also named as members of the Order of Canada were Winnipeggers Orland Arthur Backstrom, a longtime disability rights activist, Kenneth Leslie Mould, who has worked to enhance Canadian veterinary health care, and Scott Oake, a dedicated advocate for addiction recovery.
