The Headliner posed four questions to all the candidates running for election in Portage-Lisgar. Here are the answers of Liberal candidate Ken Werbiski.

Q: What are the two biggest issues you feel are of most concern to riding residents and how will you address them?

A: I have heard from many municipal and civic leaders that in order for our communities to grow we need reliable, predictable infrastructure dollars delivered to their hands. Just like in our own homes, we cannot plan for the future if we can’t count on our income. As the MP, I plan to have a close relationship with all RM councils and civic leaders. This relationship, along with infrastructure investment will ensure strong healthy communities. Stable, full-time jobs are also an issue. With infrastructure investment comes employment, and with an
investment in job training we can employ our young people in their own communities.

Q: How do you feel your party can support the lives of riding residents, specifically farm families and seniors?

A: Federally, Ottawa needs to have a closer relationship with prairie farmers to ensure that federal policies reflect their needs and wants. We need to improve grain handling and transportation to ensure farmers can get their product to market in a timely fashion. We could strengthen Ottawa’s role in agriculture research, as well as expand Ottawa’s involvement in water management. Ottawa could also enhance the farm safety net program and ensure there is a reliable farm labour pool.

Q: How would you address the issue of economic development for riding residents?

A: Investment in infrastructure creates good jobs in our home communities while making those same communities more
attractive to families. We also need to invest in renewable energy sectors and innovation. Small and medium businesses create thousands of jobs. If we invest in these innovative and fast growing markets, our possibilities are endless.

Q: What personal qualities do you bring to the role of Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar?

A: I believe in treating people with dignity and respect. I also believe that far more is
accomplished with co-operation and including people in decisions. The strong set of moral and ethical values that make me a successful nurse will also serve me well as an MP.
