Hey there, time traveller!

Winnipeg South is home to 85,540 people, based on the 2011 census, and includes the University of Manitoba and new developments of Waverley West. There are 62,156 people registered to vote in the riding.
The riding covers an area of 105 square-kilometres and includes neighbourhoods on both the east and west side of the Red River.
Four candidates are running for MP in Winnipeg South. Based on community issues and concerns, The Sou’wester posed the same questions to each candidate to find out how they hope to work for the community if elected to Parliament.

Here are the answers from NDP candidate Brianne Goertzen:
Q: What will you and your party do to support university students and their families, given that the province’s largest post-secondary institution is in Winnipeg South?
A: The NDP will continue its fight to restore the federal government’s role in making post-secondary education affordable and accessible. This is why we have tabled the National Post-Secondary Education Act to ensure adequate and stable funding to institutions. We are committed to ensuring more people can access post-secondary education by tackling skyrocketing costs and debt loads.
Q: How will you and your party support immigrants and newcomers in the riding?
A: The NDP will speed up processing times and reduce backlogs for newcomers. We will also prioritize family reunification for children and parents. We have also stated we will create an Immigration Ombudsperson to resolve complaints. And finally, we will restore $30 million to the Foreign Credential Program.
Q: Many families in the expanding areas of Winnipeg South lack access to community clubs and public schools, etc. in their neighbourhood. How will you and your party ensure these constituents have equal access to public amenities?
A: Our party has promised to make stable investments in core infrastructure, provide multi-year funding for transit, invest in affordable housing, and appoint a minister for urban affairs to speak for cities at the cabinet table. We will make more funding available for local infrastructure to free up city funds to offer more services in developing neighborhoods.
Q: Residents who have had door-to-door Canada Post delivery for decades have lost that service in favour of community mailboxes and more residents will be affected. How do you feel residents in the riding will be affected by the end of door-to-door delivery?
A: A reliable and accessible mail delivery is vital to Canadians. That is why my party plans to stop the Conservative phase-out plan and restore home delivery for households who have lost it. As well, we will consult and engage with Canadians to expand and modernize postal services instead of cutting and privatizing.
