The Washington Capitals expect their captain to be in the lineup when they face the Winnipeg Jets in a crucial Eastern Conference match-up at MTS Centre tonight.
“I feel pretty good. I’m ready to go and that’s the most important thing,” a quiet Alex Ovechkin told a throng of reporters following the morning skate in downtown Winnipeg.
“I’m good.”
The Washington forward was showing no ill-effects from an on-ice crash with Mike Knuble at practice Thursday. Ovechkin was on the ice for a prolonged time immediately following the collision, and medical staff continued to evaluate him for over an hour afterwards.
“It happened,” the Capitals star added. “It was an accident and Thank God it ended in a good way and nobody got really hurt. It is what it is.”
Ovechkin, who leads the Washington club with 29 goals and 53 points, looked fine during the morning twirl prior to the game against the Jets. The game between the Southeast Division rivals is a big one, especially on the Winnipeg end.
The Capitals, who hold down the eighth and final playoff spot with 78 points, are four points up on the Jets. Both clubs have 12 games left on the regular season schedule coming into tonight’s contest (7:30 p.m., TSN Jets, TSN 1290).
