CALGARY — Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton got back into the game here at the 2009 Tim Hortons Brier this morning, downing Northern Ontario’s Mike Jakubo 6-5.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Manitoba and improved their record to 5-3 heading into a key contest here tonight against Alberta’s Kevin Martin. That game will be televised live on TSN at 8:30 p.m.

While Stoughton was thankful to get back in the win column here this morning, he also knows his team will have to play a lot better than they did against Northern Ontario if they’re going to beat undefeated Alberta tonight before what promises to be a loud and partisan Alberta crowd.

“We’re going to have to play a lot better than we did this morning to beat these guys,” Stoughton said. “Because if they’re on their game and we play like that, they’ll be the ones one up coming home with (the hammer).”

Manitoba was less than overwhelming here this morning against a Northern Ontario team that has won just once in eight games.

Manitoba third Kevin Park, who’s been sizzling this week, had his worst game of the week, shooting just 79 per cent. Stoughton also shot just 75 per cent.

But lead Steve Gould was spectacular at 95 per cent and second Rob Fowler — who threw a woeful 66 per cent in a loss to Ontario Tuesday evening — regained his form, posting an 88 per cent.

With the victory, Manitoba is now alone in fourth place, one game behind 6-2 Newfoundland and with a game in hand on 4-3 New Brunswick.
