ADAM Norget and his men’s team along with Kaileigh Strath and her women’s team from the University of Manitoba are headed to the national curling championship, but they’re doing it on their own steam, so far.
Both teams have earned a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship March 25-29 in Montreal, but must pay their own way.
Curling became an official CIS sport last year but, because it has not yet been recognized as a varsity sport by the U of M, curling athletes are not able to access sport funding like those in other Bisons programs.
Norget’s team includes third Braden Zawada, second Michael Martin and lead Blake Zawada. Strath’s women’s team includes third Theresa Cannon, second Danielle Shrumm and lead Jolene Rutter.
“Our team has been trying to find a way to play together for a while now but this is the first year we’ve been able to, so we’re really excited to be going to nationals,” Norget said. “But realistically, we’re so far from where we need to be in terms of funding, a lot of it looks like it will be out-of-pocket.”
His team wanted to stay with friends in Montreal but the CIS requires all teams to stay in the event’s official hotel.
The Strath team, silver medallists at last year’s nationals, is in the same situation.
“We’re really looking forward to it this year because we think we can come home with the gold,” Strath said.
The two teams are working together and sharing all fundraising done by either and both teams. They held a fundraising social recently and the Manitoba Curling Association was able to give the teams a grant totalling $800. The teams will co-host a fun bonspiel April 9 at the Grain Exchange when they return from nationals to help pay off their bills.
Both teams won their respective divisions in the U of M bonspiel in mid-January.
