GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Sightseeing and culinary experimentation could only keep Jennifer Jones amused for so long.
The Winnipeg skip landed in South Korea nearly a full week ahead of the world women’s curling championship and, while she admitted to enjoying her time away from the rink, she can’t wait to get on the ice. “We’re excited for this event to get going. It feels like we’ve been here for a few days now, I think we’re ready to curl.”
The defending champion headlines one of the strongest fields in the history of the event, which began this morning. Jones opened her campaign for a second straight title in Draw 2 against last year’s runner-up, Bingyu Wang of China.
For Jones, who admits to being constantly on the go, a six-day break following her arrival in Gangneung was too long. Jones, third Cathy Overton-Clapham, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn Askin visited the rink mid-week to get a feel for the conditions, and Jones was satisfied with what she saw.
“The facility is way better than I anticipated,” said Jones.
Jones will have to adjust to playing in much quieter surroundings.
The 34-year-old had thousands of fans on her side at last year’s world championship in Vernon, B.C., and enjoyed plenty of supporters at this year’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Victoria. Crowds for this week’s round-robin games are expected to be in the hundreds.
