CHINA’S national men’s team and a host of provincial, Canadian and world champions including Vic Peters, Janet Harvey, Randy Dutiaume, Barb Spencer and David Hamblin are among the teams at the DEKALB SuperSpiel that began late Thursday at the Morris Curling Club.
A field of 28 teams — 16 in the men’s division and 12 in the women’s — are in Morris for the new World Curling Tour and Manitoba Curling Tour triple-knockout event that comes with a total prize purse of $50,400, $33,000 of that reserved for the men.
Hamblin, who hails from Morris, is a former world junior champion while Peters is a one-time Brier winner. Harvey, Dutiaume and Spencer are all provincial champions, with Spencer being Manitoba’s representative at the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts a few weeks ago.
China, skipped by Fengchun Wang, finished fourth at the 2008 Ford Men’s World Championship in Grand Forks, N.D., and is entered so it can prepare for the world championships in Moncton, N.B., next month. It chalked up the only victory over Canada’s Kevin Martin in round-robin play in Grand Forks.
Other notable entries include Chris Schille of Alberta, Reid Carruthers, Dave Boehmer, Randy Neufeld, David Bohn and current provincial junior champ Sam Good, along with MCT women’s champion Chelsea Carey, Kristy Jenion, Karen Porritt and Quebec’s Eve Bélisle along with Heather Rankin of Alberta.
There are two draws today, five on Saturday and four on Sunday before the semifinals and final on Monday.
