MIKE McEwen has netted a natural hat trick of Asham World Curling Tour victories.
The skip from Winnipeg won his third straight event on the WCT with an 8-4 victory over Serge Reid in the final of the Challenge Casino de Charlevoix in Clermont, Que., on Sunday.
After giving up a steal of one in the third, McEwen broke the game open with a score of four in the fourth and steal of one in the fifth.
McEwen won all six of his games this weekend and has now won 17 of his past 18 games. The victory was worth $12,000, which pushes his winnings to $73,750 — first on the WCT money list.
Reid, of Saguenay, Que., won $7,000.
Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott is just as hot as McEwen on the women’s European circuit. The two-time Olympic silver medallist won her fourth WCT event Sunday, defeating Switzerland’s Binia Fletscher 6-4 in the final of the International ZO Women’s Tournament in Wetzikon, Switzerland.
In Edinburgh, Scotland, Graham Shaw scored one in the extra end to beat Hammy McMillan 7-6 in at all-Scottish final at the Edinburgh International.
South of the border, Edmonton’s Brad Hannah defeated Seattle’s Leon Romaniuk 5-2 in the final of the Seattle Cash Spiel.
Three other WCT events wrap up today: In Saskatoon, a pair of Saskatchewan’s Pat Simmons and Joel Jordison both went undefeated in the preliminary round to reach the eights.
In Kamloops, B.C., Bob Ursel of Kelowna, B.C., and Calgary’s Steve Petryk both ran the table in the first round of the Labatt Crown of Curling and will be among eight qualifiers in today’s single-elimination playoffs.
On the women’s side in Kamloops, Calgary’s June Campbell and Karla Thompson of Kamloops have earned direct entry into Monday’s semifinals.
Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink and Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin won all their A-side games at the Boundary Ford Curling Classic in Lloydminster, Alta., and will be two of eight teams in today’s playoffs.
