OSHAWA, Ont. — Jeff Stoughton won’t get a chance to play in his third Capital One Grand Slam of Curling final this season.
He can thank fellow Winnipegger Mike McEwen for that.
McEwen scored three in the eighth and final end to rally for a 6-4 win Saturday night in the semifinals of the BDO Canadian Open.
The semifinal was a possible Manitoba provincial championship preview. McEwen and Stoughton will likely be the top two seeds at the Safeway Championship, Feb. 9-13 in Beausejour. The event will decide Manitoba’s representative for the Tim Horton’s Brier in London, Ont., in March.
McEwen will face Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., in today’s Canadian Open final. Howard knocked off reigning world champion Kevin Koe of Edmonton 7-3 in Saturday’s other semifinal.
The semifinals capped a long day of curling at General Motors Centre.
Earlier in the day, Stoughton posted a rare win over Olympic champion Kevin Martin of Edmonton in the quarter-finals.
Stoughton, who lost to McEwen in the final of the Grey Power World Cup in October and fell to Martin in the Swiss Chalet National final last month in Vernon, B.C., knocked off Martin 5-3. It was just Stoughton’s second win over the curling titan since 2007.
In other quarter-finals Saturday, Howard downed Rob Fowler of Brandon 5-2; Koe downed Pat Simmons of Davidson, Sask., 8-1; and McEwen beat Dale Matchett of Bradford, Ont., 7-3.
In morning games, Fowler downed John Epping of Toronto 3-1 and Mark Bice of Sarnia, Ont., 5-2 in a pair of six-end tiebreakers to reach the quarter-finals. Bice beat Don Walchuk of Edmonton 5-3 in Saturday’s first round of tiebreakers.
