OSHAWA, Ont. — Mike McEwen of Winnipeg, with a perfect nose takeout on his final stone in the extra end, beat Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., 5-4 on Sunday in the final of the BDO Canadian Open curling championship.

McEwen, who has won two of the three Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events this season, raced out to leads of 3-0 and 4-1, but Howard — a three-time world champion — rallied back each time. He scored a deuce in the seventh end and stole one in the eighth to force an extra end.

In the extra end, Howard threw a double-takeout just past a guard to remove two McEwen counters and lie two. McEwen followed with a rocket that stayed for shot and the win.

“That was awesome,” said McEwen, who picked up the $25,000 winners cheque and finished the event at 8-0.

“That was a great game. Of course I had a chance to win it in the eighth (end) and I missed the easy shot, so I guess I had to make the hero shot in the extra.”

McEwen and teammates Matt Wozniak, and B.J. and Denni Neufeld had a shot to win the match in the eighth end, and McEwen chose to throw a takeout over a draw. His shot stone connected with the Howard counter and rolled away, leaving another Ontario stone counting for the steal.

“We hung in there and I give my guys credit,” said Howard. “We did everything we had to do to come back. If you had told me after the fourth end that he had to make that shot to win, I’d be pretty pleased. I made a pretty good one to put him in that situation and he made a great shot.”

McEwen won the Grey Power World Cup of Curling in November to open the Grand Slam.
