Manitoban rinks slump at Canadian juniors

MANITOBA rinks struggled as the Canadian Junior Curling Championships opened up in Calgary on the weekend.

Both Sam Good’s men’s team and Breanne Meakin’s women’s squad are 2-3 after the fifth draw.

Stonewall’s Good won only one of three games Sunday. The Manitobans opened up with an 8-5 loss to Northern Ontario in the morning, but rebounded to defeat Newfoundland 9-7 in the afternoon. An 8-2 loss to New Brunswick in the evening draw leaves Good with an uphill path to the playoffs.

Day 2 of the junior women’s event was almost the same for Meakin’s rink from St. Vital. They lost a 7-6 squeaker to Northern Ontario to start the day and were trounced 12-3 by Newfoundland. Only a 13-9 victory over New Brunswick prevented a Sunday shutout.

Two teams, Alberta’s Nadine Chyz and Saskatchewan’s Trish Paulsen, are a perfect 5-0 and lead the women’s standings. B.C.’s Dailene Sivertson and Ontario’s Clancy Grandy are 3-1.

Saskatchewan’s Braeden Moskowy leads the men’s draw with a 5-0 record. Colin Thomas of Newfoundland is at 4-1 and Ontario’s Mat Camm is at 3-1.

Camm’s rink includes Scott Howard, a name akin to royalty in Canadian curling circles. Howard, son of three-time world champ Glenn Howard and nephew of former world and Olympic champ Russ Howard, is eager to keep the family name in the forefront.

Winning just makes getting asked about his father and uncle for the umpteenth time a little more bearable.

“I get that every interview,” said Howard. “I grew up with curling. We talked about curling at the dinner table. Wherever we went we talked about curling. I’ve probably seen every curling club in Canada.

“They’ve been very successful. I’ve watched them for a hundred years and I’d love to follow in their footsteps.”
