JOHN Usackis will wear Manitoba’s colours once again after capturing the 2011 Manitoba Credit Unions Master Men’s Provincial Championship Monday afternoon at the Killarney Curling Club.
Usackis and his Lac du Bonnet foursome defeated Neil Schmidt of the St. Vital Curling Club 5-3 in the final to advance to the Canadian Masters Curling Championships at Assiniboine-Memorial, March 30-April 5. Backed by third Dave Romano, second Lyle Dew, lead Gene Lazaruk and fifth Garry Barkman, Usackis finished the round-robin 5-2 before knocking of defending champion Ron Westcott of Fort Rouge 7-6 in the semifinal.
The win represents Usackis’ first as a skip in the Masters category, but the Manitoba Curling Hall of Famer captured a Manitoba championship in 1977 and later threw third stones for Orest Meleschuk’s provincial championship squad in 1989. He has made numerous other appearances in the Senior Men’s, Mixed and Masters Championships, including winning the Masters and Canadian Open titles as Meleschuk’s third in 2002.
