ESBJERG, Denmark — Defending champion Andrea Schopp won her opening game Friday at the Capital One women’s world curling championship.
Schopp and her German rink stole four in the 10th end when Danish skip Lene Nielsen committed a hog-line violation with her final stone. The steal clinched an 8-3 win for Schopp, who expects to build slowly at the worlds.
“We have had very little opportunity to play with each other, so we’re not thinking about defending the title — we’ve got to get into this championship,” she told reporters. “It was good to have the first game against the Danes with the crowd, we hope they keep coming.”
In the only other game in the opening draw, Norway’s Linn Githmark upset Sweden’s Anette Norberg 8-7.
Norberg missed her final two shots in the 10th — first on a hit, then on a draw — to give Githmark a steal of two and the win.
“We did everything right in the 10th, except for my first, which went really straight and all the way through,” Norberg said. “The second one was very heavy and it didn’t go anywhere.”
Canada’s Amber Holland had a bye in the first draw and opens against China’s Bingyu Wang on Saturday.
