DIGBY, N.S. — Kelly Robertson and Joyce Potter have punched their tickets to the final of the men’s and women’s divisions at the World Financial Group Canadian senior curling championships.
Robertson and his Manitoba rink finished head and shoulders above the field on the men’s side, completing the round robin with a 10-1 record. He won twice Thursday, first scoring a 7-4 win over British Columbia’s Greg McAulay then using a pair of three-enders to down Newfoundland and Labrador’s Jeff Thomas 9-6.
The loss was the second of the day for Thomas, who finished at 7-4 along with Alberta’s Brad Hannah and Saskatchewan’s Brad Heidt, creating a three-team tie for second.
Hannah earned a bye to the semifinal by virtue of his round-robin wins over Thomas and Heidt, meanwhile Thomas and Heidt will meet in a tiebreaker.
Before losing to Robertson, Thomas lost 8-6 to Quebec’s Robert Maclean.
Finished strong
Hannah finished strong with a pair of wins, beating Northern Ontario’s Eric Harnden 8-7 and Ontario’s Guy Racette 9-5 to finish at 7-4.
Heidt split his two games, first he gave up two in the 10th and lost 7-6 to MacAulay then doubled up Nova Scotia’s Scott Saunders 8-4 in a must-win game in the night draw.
Potter, skipping the Ontario entry on the women’s side, won both her games Thursday to finish at 9-2. New Brunswick’s Heidi Hanlon had an identical record, but heads into the playoffs ranked second after losing her round-robin game to Potter earlier in the week.
Potter first beat Alberta’s Diane Foster 8-2, then clinched first with a 7-4 win over Sandy Penkala of the Territories.
Hanlon, who will play Saskatchewan’s Delores Syrota in the semifinal, did her part to put pressure on Potter by winning both her games. She beat Prince Edward Island’s June Moyaert 5-3 in the morning and hammered Penkala 11-1 in the afternoon.
Syrota split her two games and finished alone in third at 8-3. First she blew a 5-2 lead in a 7-5 loss to British Columbia’s Lynne Noble, but she rebounded with a 5-4 win over Nova Scotia’s Colleen Jones. Syrota scored the winning deuce with last rock in the 10th.
The men’s tiebreaker and both semifinals go Friday, with both finals set for Saturday at Digby Arena.
