Jason Armstead’s legal troubles didn’t help — he was arrested on charges of domestic violence this winter — and likely his age, 29, was a factor as well, but the Bombers have cut the chord with their main kick returner from a year ago. That leaves as the main return threats a slew of rookies including John Eubanks, an all-star during his days at Southern Mississippi, former Oregon State running back Yvenson Bernard, Kyle Smith (Youngstown State), Chris Jackson, who spent time with Jacksonville and New Orleans and former Texas star Ramonce Taylor, who should be on the field by the weekend.
THEY WROTE IT:
Milt Stegall, a guest analyst for TSN this season, offered up his take on the CFL as camps prepared to open on the network’s website. He picked the West finishing: 1. Calgary, 2. Edmonton, 3. B.C., 4. Saskatchewan. And in the East he has: 1. Montreal, 2 (tie) Winnipeg and Hamilton and 4. Toronto.
“Second place is up for grabs right now,” wrote Stegall. “Winnipeg is in a transition right now with the new coach (Mike Kelly), the new personnel. I think if I was to walk in that locker-room right now, 70 per cent of the guys wouldn’t know who I was because they’ve just made so many changes.
“Then you go to the ‘Hamilton Blue Bombers’. All the guys they got from Winnipeg right now, I think they made some great additions. Their two starting tackles (Alexandre Gauthier and Dan Goodspeed) will be the starting tackles who played in Winnipeg. Those guys did a great job. And their starting quarterback may be the starting quarterback (Kevin Glenn) from the Blue Bombers last year. Their main thing is can (RB) Kenton Keith get back into CFL shape? He put on that weight playing in the NFL. If he can get back to his form that he was when he left the CFL, I think they have a real good chance at giving Montreal a run for their money.”
