ANOTHER KICKING CANDIDATE?

The Bombers took a look at Darren Booth, an English-born former rugby player now living in Winnipeg, near the end of practice on Thursday. He had contacted director of football operations Ross Hodgkinson last fall and has been worked out by the team a couple of times this winter. He is said to have an ‘extremely powerful leg’, but struggled to punt at practice before switching to placekicking and faring only marginally better.

"I don’t know anything about him, Ross brought him in," said coach Kelly. "I don’t think he’s ever seen that show What Not To Wear (he was wearing a sweatshirt and shorts), but other than that we’ll just have to see how things progress. I know when he’s warmed up he takes his tuque off so that means he’s serious. Other than that, to be honest with you as soon as I’m done here I’ve got to go over to the other side (football operations) and ask, ‘What just happened here?’"

ROOKIE CAMP DAY 2 STARS:

Here’s who we liked: LB Thaine Carter, DBs Darrius Battles, Brady Browne and Jasper Johnson, RB Yvenson Bernard and D-lineman Don Oramasionwu and Chase Ortiz.

EXTRA HANDS:

The Bombers new coaching staff will have some help during training camp with six guest coaches lending their expertise. Three of the guest coaches — Antonio Banks (1998 and 2003), Larry Thompson (1991-92) and hall of famer Brett MacNeil (1992-97, 99-02) — are former Bombers. Joining them are Lance Botkin (D-line coach at Pearland High School in Texas); Manny Matsakis (Texas Tech, also the offensive co-ordinator at Wyoming when Brock Ralph played there) and Carl Tolmie (last with the Universite de Montreal).
