IN HOUSE SCOUTING REPORT: Arguably no one knows Steven Jyles better than Jamie Barresi, the Bombers’ offensive co-ordinator/QB coach who also worked with him in Regina. Here’s his take on the club’s starter Saturday:
"He’s very athletic, he’s got a really strong arm and he’s very creative. He’s been in this league for awhile and he deserves a chance. We had him for two years in Regina and he was always very supportive of the starting quarterback, whoever it was. He’s been very supportive of Buck and I don’t think it was an easy situation for him, knowing he would back him up, but he took the role when we told him and it’s been seamless. He’s really been a good pro."
Barresi said the Bombers’ offensive game plan may feature a few different wrinkles with Jyles at the controls and not Buck Pierce, but he was hardly willing to draw them up for a media hack.
"There are a few," he said with a wink. "Both guys are similar in a lot of ways because they are athletic and have strong arms and can run. There’s a lot of similarities there."
AND THE BOSS SAYS: "The one thing about Steven is he prepares as a starter each week," head coach Paul LaPolice said of Jyles. "Some people say that, but I truly believe that… Steven does a great job on the sideline during games. He was here (Monday) for three or four hours watching film and watching all the games. I gave him an early ready list and he came in this morning with some ideas. Those are great veteran guys to have. He had a good practice today and we’ll see how he does."
STAR POWER: The Bombers have made stars of some of their opponents through the first three weeks of the CFL season, with four players being named players of the week for their work against the Bomb Squad. Week 1 it was Hamilton return man Marcus Thigpen; Week 2 it was Argo returner Chad Owens, and last week both Kevin Glenn (offence) and Dave Stala (receiver) were honoured for their handiwork in dismantling the Bombers.
ESKS NUMBERS GAME: The Eskimos are just 4-10 since Labour Day last year, and a loss this weekend would leave them at 0-4, potentially their worst start since 1965, when they dropped their first five en route to a 5-11 record.

Ouch report
QB Buck Pierce, DT Dorian Smith, SB Terence Jeffers-Harris and S Ian Logan were among the walking wounded at practice Tuesday, with DB Alex Suber and FB Daryl Stephenson back at work. LB Derrick Doggett was taking turns in rookie Marcellus Bowman’s spot. Expect Jeffers-Harris back in the next couple of days.
A little OT
The Bomber defence was on the field early Tuesday before the rest of the team as defensive co-ordinator Kavis Reed put his charges through some extra teaching time. Winnipeg’s D was lit up for 33 first downs and 433 yards of offence in the loss to Hamilton.
Hello
Eskimo receivers Fred Stamps (399) and Kelly Campbell (301) have rolled up 700 of Edmonton’s 902 total passing yards in three games.
