Power Rankings

One man’s totally subjective rankings after 11 weeks of play (last week’s rank in parentheses):

1. (1) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (9-2): Some defensive flaws exposed in loss to Riders.

2. (2) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (8-3): Only the Als would find criticism in an easy victory over Edmonton. And they are vowing to get better this week against the Bombers.

3. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (7-4): Huge bounce-back for this crew with ‘W’ over Stamps.

4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (6-5): Good enough to scare people when November comes.

5. (5) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (6-5): Superb special teams and defence are masking a woeful offence.

6. (6) B.C. LIONS (3-8): Awful fourth quarter vs. Tabbies cost them a ‘W.’

7. (7) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-8): You can say they’re close; the record says they’re just not good enough across the board.

8. (8) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (2-9): This awful and still just two points out of a playoff berth? Only in the CFL, right?

JUICY NUMBERS — 255

Receiving yards for Rider receiver Andy Fantuz last week. Fantuz, named the CFL’s top offensive and Canadian player of the week for last week, is second on Saskatchewan’s single-game receiving list behind Chris DeFrance (260 vs. Edmonton on Aug. 5, 1983.

FYI

These are the kind of answers that must drive Wally Buono nuts. Here’s QB Casey Printers’ take on the Lions blowing a fourth-quarter lead Saturday with five turnovers in the final 15 minutes. “… But a step back is the wrong word. We are a good football team that just didn’t play a full 60 minutes. We played a good three quarters and in the fourth quarter we decided, for whatever reason, just to kinda take our foot off the pedal. That doesn’t make us a bad team. It’s frustrating, but it’s not life-changing. It’s a game.”… We asked and the CFL said it doesn’t track the success rate on coaches’ challenges. Says here they should… Good sign you’re not winning the field-position game: the Eskimos have conceded seven safety touches in their last three games.
