IT was the coming-out-party every player dreams about from the first moment they pull on shoulder pads and a helmet.

Winnipeg Blue Bomber receiver Gregg Carr was simply superb in his CFL debut Friday night, finishing with four catches for 185 yards and touchdowns of 74 and 71 yards — all in about a half of work after pulling up with a bad ankle early in the third quarter.

But, alas, the party was spoiled in the final moments as the Montreal Alouettes rallied in a 44-40 victory that left the Bomber locker- room completely devastated.

“At the end of the day, all players will tell you it’s always about the ‘Ws’ and the ‘Ls’,” said Carr, added to the Bomber practice roster on Sept. 1.

“You feel good, but you know you’d feel that much better had this been a win. You want to take the positives from this but at the same time there is a bitter taste in your mouth.

“Next time we’ll do this with the win, not in a moral victory. We don’t want those. We want ‘Ws.’ ” Sore ankle

Carr left the game with the sore ankle — he called it a ‘little bruise on a good spot’ — but vowed to be back at work ASAP to help get the Bombers back in the playoff picture. Interestingly, the club could have Carr and Terence Jeffers-Harris in the lineup as soon as this Saturday’s contest in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions.

A huge target at 6-foot-6, Carr was described upon his arrival as big, but not exactly a speed merchant. Check that now, after he ran away from several Alouette defenders on his first TD.

“I told people that they don’t understand — you practice hard, but at the same time everything in practice is situational,” said Carr. “You never really get the chance to open up and run.

“Hopefully now I’ll quiet some critics about whether or not I can run. Some of my teammates call it ‘game speed.’ I just go out there and give it all I got and when the ball’s in my hands it’s going to be a problem bringing me down.”
