LET’S shed some light inside Alex Suber’s mouth.

For the record, the Bombers defensive back said he did not swallow his mouthguard while trying to make a tackle on the opening kickoff of Winnipeg’s 21-20 loss to Calgary Thursday night. And for the record, he denies suffering a concussion.

“Just got banged up, man… got a stinger,” Suber said Monday. “It was just a precautionary call, they told me not to finish the game. The mouthpiece thing, I don’t know where that came from.”

New to viewers this football season, the ‘CFL mouthguard digestion report’ first originated from the TSN broadcast that night. For the record, the sideline reporter on the scene, Shawn Churchill, stands by his report, saying a team official familiar with what took place on the Bombers bench told him Suber had gulped down the protective oral guard.

“Whoever said it scared my mom,” Suber said.

The team also denies Suber swallowed his mouthguard.

One suspects that it is possible to swallow a mouthguard, when you consider that some players do not attach it to their facemask during games. A jarring hit — like the one Suber took to the side of his neck when he tried to make a tackle on kick returner Johnny Forzani — could dislodge the plastic piece from the teeth and one deep breath later, no more mouthguard.

Adding more intrigue to ‘mouthguard-gate’ was the report that Bombers equipment staff were fitting Suber for a new guard during the game — just in case coaches and medical staff allowed him to go back in.

Where is the original mouthguard then?

“I don’t know,” Suber said. “I guess I took that one out.”

Suber is expected to be back on the practice field this morning.
