Pasquale to start in net for IceCaps against Whale

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — The St. John’s IceCaps are back to a three-goaltender situation, but Eddie Pasquale, the netminder of record in the American Hockey League team’s four-game win streak, will get to start again Saturday night when the IceCaps host the Connecticut Whale at Mile One Centre.

On Friday, the parent Winnipeg Jets returned goalie Peter Mannino to St. John’s after veteran goalkeeper Chris Mason came off the NHL team’s injured reserve list.

Mannino was recalled from St. John’s two weeks ago after Mason suffered a groin injury. During his stay with Winnipeg, he backed up Jets No. 1 netminder Ondrej Pavelec and only saw action in the third period of Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers, when he stopped all four shots he faced in 20 minutes of work in relief of Pavelec.

Mannino was  scheduled to arrive in St. John’s Friday evening, but even if he had shown up earlier and had been able to get in a practice with the IceCaps, it would not have been a surprise to learn St. John’s head coach Keith McCambridge had given Pasquale the nod for the first of two games against Connecticut, the farm team of the New York Rangers. The 20-year-old sports a sparkling 1.75 goals-against average and .935 save percentage, numbers boosted by his performance on a New England road trip, when he picked up four wins, including one against the Whale in Hartford.

His last decision came in a 4-3 decision over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last Sunday afternoon, when he provided shutout relief after taking over from David Aebischer.

The IceCaps have recalled defenceman Jake Marto from the Colorado Eagles of the ECHL, the second time this month they have called on the services of the University of North Dakota product. Marto played one game for St. John’s on the recent road swing but was returned to Colorado at the conclusion of the trip. St. John’s head coach Keith McCambridge says Marto isn’t being brought in because of an injury but to supply some seventh-defenceman insurance for a St. John’s team still missing three rearguards on recall to Winnipeg … The visiting Whale feature three former members of the AHL’s St. John’s Maple Leafs: defencemen Brendan Bell and forwards Kris Newbury and John Mitchell … St. John’s general manager Craig Heisinger, the assistant GM of the Jets, is scheduled to take in the weekend series between the IceCaps and Whale. Winnipeg plans to have some sort of parental presence, whether its Heisinger, GM Kevin Cheveldayoff or top members of the organization’s scouting staff, at every St. John’s game … Even though it’s been six days since they last played, the IceCaps continue to lead the AHL’s overall points standings, although depending on the result of Friday’s late game between the Charlotte Checkers and Oklahoma Barons in OKC, St. John’s might have to share the title. The Barons trailed the Caps by two points heading into Friday.
