Most family reunions involve backyard barbecues and beers, a few laughs and relatives throwing arms around each other while posing for one snapshot after another.
And then there are the Bogosians, who opted to get together Tuesday night with 15,000-plus hockey fans at the MTS Centre serving as a backdrop.
Yes, Zach Bogosian — one of the Winnipeg Jets’ key defenceman — and older brother Aaron, a centre who is on a tryout with the Columbus Blue Jackets, stepped on the ice for the first time together in the pre-season debut for both teams.
Unbeknownst to Aaron, their father Ike was flown in from New York by Zach to help celebrate the occasion.
“(Aaron) has no clue,” said Zach prior to Tuesday’s game.
“Maybe I’ll mention it to him during the game if we bump into each other. My dad’s really excited to see two of his boys play against each other in the National Hockey League. It’s something I’m sure he’s dreamed about his whole life and it’ll be a fun experience.”
Drafted third overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2008, Zach — still just 21 — already has 199 NHL games under his belt. The 24-year-old Aaron, on the other hand, spent the last four years at St. Lawrence University before joining the AHL’s Springfield Falcons at the end of last season for a 10-game stint in which he scored two goals. Now he’s just trying to open enough eyes to stay on the Blue Jackets’ radar screen.
“He’s not the biggest guy in size, but he makes up for it by how hard he works,” said Zach of his older brother. “I’m just real proud of him as to how far he’s come: he played four years of college and had a real good 10 games with Springfield at the end of the year and now to have Columbus invite him… it’s a pretty good feeling to see him here and I’m sure he’ll take full advantage of every opportunity he gets.”
The Bogosians are a tight family — Zach lists his father as the biggest influence in his hockey career — and correspond regularly.
Naturally, then, the question came up Tuesday as to whether Zach would slam his bro up against the glass if he had the chance to line him up or — just imagine — drop the gloves if the moment became heated.
“You never know… if it happens, it happens,” said Zach with a grin. “But he’s pretty tough. And I don’t think my mother would approve of that. So maybe I’ll keep my mom in the back of my mind tonight if that happens.
“There’s no friends out there… I’m sure we’ll be laughing out there. It’ll be a fun experience, I’m sure it’s something I’ll never forget.”
