Big picture

A third straight loss has left the Jets stalled and off the playoff line in the Eastern Conference. The situation is measurably worse today, as Winnipeg, at 50 points in 50 games, falls five points off that line. New Jersey, Washington, Toronto and Florida are all ahead of the 10th-place Jets at 55 points. Winnipeg is just five points away from first in the Southeast Division but also now five points away from being in last place in the conference.

Little picture

In one of the most physical games of the season, the Jets competed. They gave back as much as they absorbed, except in the offensive categories. There, the team has scored just 17 goals in their last 11 games and the tailspin is 3-7-1 as a result. It’s the third time the Jets have been shut out in those 11 games and the sixth time this season. The Rangers had goals in each period, from Ryan Callahan, John Mitchell and Brad Richards, and Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves for his fifth shutout of the season.

Game-changer

Early in the third period down 2-0, the Jets stormed to the attack, getting golden chances for Tanner Glass and Game-breaker in the early going. But Lundqvist turned them back and even though the Jets continued to get chances, the trend was set.

Free Press ★★★

★ Henrik Lundqvist, Rangers. Too good for Winnipeg’s popgun attack on this night.

★★ Chris Thorburn, Jets. One of many visitors who did not back away from anything.

★★★ Ryan Callahan, Rangers. Two points, leads a firstplace team by example.
