ABOUT THE HAWKS

Chicago is coming off a 3-2 OT home loss to Calgary on Sunday, a game in which Reto Berra kicked out 42 shots to earn a win in his first start in net for the Flames.

The Hawks flew to Washington. D.C. on Monday to visit the White House and meet President Barack Obama. “Since I took office we’ve hosted a lot of championship teams, from Boston, New York, Pittsburgh and Miami, but since I’ve been president only one team has brought a world championship to my hometown of Chicago and now the Blackhawks have done it twice. Twice!” Obama said Monday. “Three years ago, the Hawks won their first Stanley Cup in 49 years. And keep in mind, the Cubs have been waiting for 105 so 49 might have not seemed so bad. But luckily, the second Stanley Cup came just a little bit quicker.”

The Blackhawks also visited the Warrior Cafe at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Monday and received a standing ovation from those vets who were able to stand. As Bob Verdi of the Chicago Daily Herald Times reported, a double amputee brought a bag of pucks to have them signed. Said former Jets’ D-man Johnny Oduya: “If you come here sore, nothing hurts now. Not after seeing what these people have been through and their frame of mind. Look at them. All smiling.”

Patrick Kane is tied with Jonathan Toews for the Hawks’ scoring lead, but is a -9. Toews is +2.

The Hawks have the sixth-best power play in the NHL (21.8 per cent) but are last in the penalty kill (73.2 per cent).
