TOKYO – Canada’s Denis Shapovalov is moving on to the quarterfinals of the Japan Open.

Shapovalov defeated Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 on Friday in second-round men’s singles action at the tennis tournament.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native had 11 aces but committed five double faults.

He also broke on four of his five opportunities in the match.

Tabilo had three aces without a double fault and broke on three of his four chances.

Shapovalov will next face the winner between top-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
