HE’S the defending world champion, but you’d be hard-pressed to tell by Jeff Stoughton’s 20th-place ranking on the World Curling Tour money list right now.

With six weeks already gone in the WCT season, Stoughton and his foursome — third Jon Mead, second Reid Carruthers and lead Steve Gould — have scraped together just $11,508 in tour winnings.

That is almost exactly one-sixth of the earnings of the No. 1 team on the WCT money list right now — Manitoba rival Mike McEwen, who has won three of four tour events he’s entered and has a cool $66,000 to show for it.

The good news for Stoughton is all that could change dramatically this weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., where 18 of the world’s top men’s teams have gathered for the first Grand Slam of Curling event of the season — the $100,000 World Cup of Curling.

“We’re feeling good about things right now,” Stoughton said Wednesday from Sault Ste. Marie. “We’ve done nothing but practise the last week and a half and we’re really looking forward to this one. It’s always fun to play in these Slam events.”

The winner of this weekend’s Slam stands to earn approximately $25,000, which could conceivably vault Stoughton all the way from 20th spot on the money list to second behind only McEwen. CBC will televise the final on Sunday at noon.

Stoughton will be joined in Sault Ste. Marie by McEwen and Brandon’s Rob Fowler.

Meanwhile, the top Manitoba women’s teams will be in Red Deer, Alta., this weekend where a top prize of $9,500 is up for grabs. Chelsea Carey, Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham and Jill Thurston will all compete.
